WHARF CONTROL
AGREEMENT AT AUCKLAND (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Oct. 7. ‘‘A complete agreement has been reached between the Waterfront Control Commission and the ’ Auckland Waterside Workers’ -Union,” said the Minister of Labour, Mr P. C, Webb, commenting to-day on the conference between, the parlies, which has extended over two days. Among the questions on which an amicable agreemnt was reached was the reinstatement of two waterside workers who were dismissed last January for refusing to handle produce during the cool store dispute at the King’s wharf and the reintroduction of the contract system of handling cargo. Mr Webb said it had been decided again to adopt the contract system as far as possible in working all snips, and the union delegates would seek the endorsement of the conference findings when the workers held their usual monthly stop-work meeting. The commencing date would be arranged by the commission and the union. “It was generally agreed that the present method of handling cargo on some of the wharves could be much improved,” Mr Webb added. “The whole question of the quicker and cheaper handling of cargo is under consideration. If the commission and the men approach the Auckland Harbour Board with practical proposals consideration will be given to them.”
