THE MAYORESS’S COMMITTEE PARCELS AND COMFORTS FOR SOLDIERS At a meeting of the Otago Provincial Patriotic Council yesterday afternoon the Mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) said that in spite of the difficulty of securing the necessary supplies of wool from time to time, the Mayoress’s Ladies’ Committee had done splendid work since it had been set up. The goods despatched by the council up to September 30. 1941, were as follows: Woollen goods: Balaclavas 5749, pullovers 2499, scarves 5092, gloves 885 pairs, mittens 6314 pairs. Hussifs: Hussifs 5162, pay-book covers 60. Gift parcels: Six consignments of gift parcels have been packed for the troops overseas, the total number of parcels despatched being 15,444. New Zealand Lady Galway Guild: Eleven shipments of clothing, etc., have been made for the relief of distress ip Great Britain, the number of cases despatched being 931. Latterly these cases have been of the cubic feet measurement, but many of the cases in the earlier shipments were 6 cubic feet. The early shipments also included over 1000 pairs of footwear. There arc 310 cases awaiting shipment. The gift parcels, the Mayor said, were of an approximate value of 9s each. To date, the Mayor added, they had also supplied sporting material to the various camps of a total of £938 17s Id . Mr James Ritchie said he would like, on behalf of the country people, to express his great appreciation of the work of the Mayoress and her committee. He had seen some of the splendid work they were doing, and he did not think the people realised the service they were rendering. The Mayor said that the women in the countrv were doing their part equally well. — (Applause.)
