SUNDAY EXCURSIONS

TO THE EDITOR

Sir, —It is with deep regret that I note the resumption of the Sunday Daffodil Day excursion to Lawrence. This excursion used to be an annual one, but was discontinued some three or four years ago. much to the satisfaction of many of the Christian members of the community in Lawrence. Apparently this excursion has been revived through the efforts of the Lawrence Progress League. This body was formed a few weeks ago, on the motion of Messrs J. B. McKinlay and T, H, Clark at a meeting attended by about 30 people. If these gentlemen, who were responsible for the formation of the league, had envisaged the attitude the league was to take up in this matter. I feel confident their approval would not have been given to it. I read with pleasui’e the vehement protest of our representative in Parliament. Mr J. A. Roy, in the House of Representatives last week, when the Railway Estimates were being debated, against the allowing of too much intoxicating liquor being consumed on excursion trains. As the revival of the excursion and further desecration of the Sabbath is not appreciated by the majority of our residents. I appeal to the ministers and chief citizens of the town to enter an emphatic protest against the holding of the excursion. I think also it would be fitting for the members of the local W.C.T.U. to take up the cudgels in support of Mr Roy, and enunciate the principles expressed at its recent conference, held at Green Island. In the depressing days through which we are passing let us hope that we shall all remember our Biblical teachings and see that the tranquillity of the Sabbath is not disturbed.—l am. etc.,

Sic Transit Gloria Mundi. Lawrence, September 25.
