“LARGELY-ATTENDED MEETINGS”

TO THE EDITOR Sir, —I notice from the Daily Times that the Otago branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants of New Zealand and the Otago Carpenters' Union both held '“largely-at-tended” meetings virtually to protes. against the holding of a public meeting in connection with the “Doctors Bill j Now. Sir. what is a “largely-attended meeting? I recollect an occasion on which it was reported that a mass meeting of a Dunedin union with a large membership was held and that this meeting had decided to do something or other—l forget which now I asked a member of this union if he had been present at the meeting and he told me that he had not been aware that a meeting had been held until he had seen the information in the news. “ The president and the secretary of our union fix up the resolutions for publication,” he told me.. I can well believe this statement, as I have a little knowledge of the “fifth column work of some trades unions in this connection. May I be privileged to ask you if. when these resolutions from “largely-attended” meetings are brought to your office, an affidavit is also presented to show that a meeting was “largely-attended”? In the meantime I am afraid I cannot believe that either of the meetings mentioned above were “ largely-attended.”—l am. etc. Doubting Thomas.
