INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM
INCALCULABLE VALUE THREAT OF TOTALITARIANISM (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 24. The incalculable value of the retention of individual freedom in relation to the system of government of any people was stressed by the Mayor (Mr T. C. A, Hislop), opening the annual conference of the New Zealand retail Motor Trade Association to-day. The difference between the totalitarian ideal of complete control by the State, as against individual freedom of action, was immeasurable, but it was being definitely exemplified to-day, he said. There were several others besides the totalitarian order, some of which called themselves Socialist or Communist, but more inspiring was the ideal —a very old one —based on man’s right to be free and his right to live his life according to the Ideas and ideals he had.
Mr C. R. Edmond, who presided? congratulated the conference on the large attendance, which showed an active interest in the affairs of the federation. Various complications arising in the next few months would bring new problems which unity would help to solve.
