RISE IN TRAM FARES
ADJUSTMENT TO REMOVE ANOMALY VETOED BY PRICE TRIBUNAL (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH. Sept. 22. To remove what it considered to be an anomaly in its fares, the Christchurch Tramway Board early last week raised from 9d to lOd the return fares on three of its runs—to New Brighton, to RedclifTs, and to Racecourse road on the North Beach trip. The Price Tribunal heard of it, and pointed out to the board that no application had been made for the increase. The general manager of the board, Mr H. E. Jannan, immediately brought the fares back to 9d, and the board has since put in a formal application for an increase. The price stabilisation order recently announced by the Minister of Finance. Mr W. Nash, included tram fares.
Explaining the' position to-night, the -acting chairman of the board, Mr J. K. Archer, • M.L.C., said the change was made because, as the fares were before the increase, regular users of these lines holding trip tickets were paying more than the buyer of a casual return ticket. To remove any objection on this score, the price of a casual return ticket was put up one penny. The board considered that it was removing an anomaly rather than making a general increase, and did not think the Price Tribunal had an interest in the matter. As soon as the tribunal heard of the rise, however, it had acted, and on its representations Mr Jarman had brought the price down again.
