FURNITURE REMOVALS
RAILWAY DEPARTMENT'S APPLICATION COMPETITION FOR CARRIERS (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 17. The opinion that the Railways Department should not enter into competition with town carriers in household removals of furniture was expressed to-day by Mr V. Raines, the No. 4 Transport Licensing Authority, at a sitting in Christchurch at which he acted in place of Mr T. H. Langford, the No. 3 Authority. For the department, Mr G. H. McLean said that it was more satisfactory to the department to be able to complete the delivery of furniture right through to a client by rail and road. Under this system the department accepted responsibility for removals of furniture in the city, but responsibility could not be accepted by the department otherwise. The department had built up its business over 10 years and there had been a demand for the service. He expressed concert lest the department should lose its identity in the eyes of its customers. Mr Raines said that he would give a written decision after he had had an opportunity of reading the evidence. He was of the opinion, however, that the Railways Department should not enter into competition with the town carriers in Christchurch or elsewhere. He had already refused a similar application in DuAedin earlier this month.
