October 2, 4.—Hawke's Bay J.C October 9, 11.—Masterton R.C. October 11. 13.—Dunedin J.C. Anniversary. —The Westland Racing Club will celebrate its seventy-fifth anniversary at its Christmas neeting. Egyptian Rose. - The Iliad filly Egyptian Rose may be a starter on the second day at Geraldlne. A Small Margin.— ln the Ohapi Hack Handicap a margin of 51b covers the field. Dash o' Dublin, who is topweight, started eight times as a two-year-old and scored two thirds and a second. A Difference. —Five three-year-old* have officially been described as fillies, and others of the same age put down as mares. Colts or fillies were once described as such until becoming four-year-olds. Master Cameron.—The Mr Standfast colt Master Cameron, who ran third in the Nursery Handicap, cost 425gns as a yearling. His dam was got by Rosenor. Iceland Spar.'— lceland Spar did not show up in his race at Ashburton. He was. however, a stayer racing amongst sprinters on a heavy track. Iceland Spar may be seen out on the second day at Geraldine. Da«h o* Dink.— The Nursery Handicap winner. Dash o' Dink, was got by Dink—Express, by Whirlwind—Holymond, by Limond. Dink is a halfbrother to Beau Pere, and Dash o Dink is his first winner. Grev Ni«ht.—-ln six starts last season Grey Night put up his best performance by running third with 8.5 to King's Toast 9.2 and Star Wink 7.9 over six furlongs at Ashburton in lmin 13sec. He raced last Saturday as a gelding and showed a retention of pace.
Overweight.—A. E. Ellis was engaged to ride Monetary in the John Gngg Stakes, but was Hb over on the scales, and the mount went to an apprentice. Ellis did not receive a mount during the day. This is rather .interesting in connection with a rider boosted to the sky during the Grand National meeting. Monetary got into trouble twice during his race.
Donnybrook Fair.—The field for the Novice Stakes at Ashburton included Donnybrook Fair, a brown colt by Foxbridge. He is a likely looking sort, but drew 23 at the barrier, and hence, for a green colt, held a hopeless position on the extreme outside of a straggling start.
Chary—The Inflation gelding Chary showed something like a return to his two-year-old form when he finished second to Expellant at Avondale. As a two-year-old Chary won three times and also ran two seconds and a third in- seven starts, -'e lost form last season. but now as a '-elding seems to be coming back to form. Route March, —The Avondale Guineas’ winner Route March won four times and was second once in nine starts as a two-vear-old. He is a bay colt by Vaals from Roval March, by Lucullus —March, by Marble Arch—Lady Musket. bv Blairgowrie. He belongs to the Yatterina family, of which the best known descendants are Wairiki, Libeller, Fusilier. Matchlock, and Plnfire. who were all good winners. Yatterina won the Auckland Easter Handicap in 1875.
Fleche d’Or.—As a two-year-old Fleche d’Or ran third in four races and was second in another out of 12 starts. She ran at Ashburton, but appeared to be one of those who failed to get away well at the start. She was got bv Tiderace from Talari, by Chief Ruler—Doree. by Lucullus—d’Oro. a sister to Desert Gold, Fleche d’Or ran in Mr K. Austin's colours, and in aond time should make a valuable addition to his stud. Talari is a sister to Princess Doreen. Ortyx.—The Lord Warden marc Ortvx. who has been booked to Man’s Pal, was one of the fastest two-year-olds ever seen at Wingatui. On two occasions she was timed to run half a mile near the'rails on the course proper in 48 3-ssec. or a tick better. The course at the time carried a good topdressing of silt and could not be deemed particularly fast. At that tinie the race record stood at 49sec. put up by Nones in 1914. Until the appearance of Ortyx. Nones was considered the fastest two-year-old ever seen on the course. Ortvx is a half-sister to Dark Flight, who won in the record time of Imin 9 2-ssec at Riccarton.
