UNIVERSITY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the council of the Otago University was held yesterday afternoon and was attended by the chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell), and Messrs A. Steel, W. R, Brugh H P. Kidson, James Wallace, Dr C. E. Hercus Dr R. J. T. Bell, Dr James Fitzgerald. Dr Stanley Batchelor, and the Rev. D. C. Herron. Students’ Canteen The president of the Otago University Students’ Association (Mr C. Blackie) wrote asking permission to carry out certain structural alterations in the Students’ Union buildings necessitated hy the impossibility of running the canteen under present conditions. The council was asked to provide the amount of £7O for this work. The letter referred to the great success achieved by Miss Sundstrum in controlling the canteen. The chancellor said he thought a good case had been made out why the council should agree to the request made.
It was decided to refer the matter to the Board of Control and the Works and Finance Committees for a report. On Active Service The secretary of the Otago University Students’ Association forwarded a list of students and graduates on active service of all faculties other than medicine. ... The registrar (Mr H. Chapman) said that the number so far was 165. To that.figure had to be added the medical list. Planting of Creepers Mr A. C. Cameron, hon. secretary of the Dunedin Amenities Society, wrote suggesting that Virginia creeper be grown up the side of the administrative block, and that roses be planted along the west bank-of the Leith. The society would provide the necessary plants. Some discussion took place on the question whether the creeper might not ultimately prove a nuisance, and it was decided, while agreeing to the planting of roses, to refer the other matter to the Works Committee to confer with authorities on the question of the creeper. Loan of Pictures
The University librarian wrote forwarding letters from Dr McLintock and the Under-secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs, requesting the loan of five pictures from the Hocken collection for exhibit in America,
The chancellor pointed out that the Hocken deed prohibited the removal of any part of the Hocken collection from the Hocken Library, but that it had been ascertained that four of the pictures asked for were not covered by this prohibition. It was decided to lend the four pictures as requested, and to point out that the fifth picture asked for could not be lent. f Professorial Board The Professorial Board reported that it had considered the proposed course in Civics submitted by the secretary of the Public Service Commissioners. The opinion of the board was that the course desired could more suitably be given at an evening class at the Technical College. The letter was noted. Mapoutahi Pa The commissioner of Crown lands wrote stating that Mapoutahi pa had been vested in the University Council for a further period of five years. The letter was noted. Purchase of Properties The Director of Education notified that a grant- of £1855 had been approved for the purchase of properties numbered 70 and 74 Hanover street. The rents are to be paid into the Public Account. The chancellor said that the council was to be congratulated on securing these properties, which are adjacent to the Medical School.
