BASES IN AFRICA

THE AMERICAN FLEET FREE FRENCH OFFER ■ LONDON, Aug. 28. The Brazzaville correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says General de Gaulle, in an interview, declared: "I have invited the United States navy to take over Duala, Gabon and Pointe Noire as bases on a long-term lease analogous to British and American leases. "I did not ask for destroyers in return. I asked only that the United States should use these bases to counteract Dakar and make it more difficult for Hitler to thrust deeper into Africa, as he undoubtedly will when he is able to release some of his forces from Russia. Only increased naval and air strength on the Atlantic coast can handle the Germans if they choose to take over Vichy's air bases in Africa." -:■
