SCHOLARSHIP DECIDED BOYS' ELOCUTION CLASSES PRAISE FROM ADJUDICATOR " I should 'like to know where Dunedin finds all the boys to. recite at. its annual festival. The numerical strength, and also the standard, are much higher in the 12 years J» under 16 vears section than in any other competitions at which I have adjudicated, said Mr Errol H. F. Muir, of Wellington, the judge in the elocution classes at the Dunedin Competitions Society s festival, when commenting, upon the recitations of "H;M.S. Jervis Bay in Victoria Hall yesterday morning. Alter recalling Owen Hymen and Grattan O'Sullivan, the lads placed first and second, he congratulated them on their performances, which, he said, had been the "best he had heard in his experience. "In Dunedin, there are twice as many entrants for boys' work as in Wellington," he added. Another attractive programme, was presented in the three halls yesterday morning and afternoon, and again in His Majesty's Theatre at night there was a good attendance. Mr J. McK.. Miller was the chairman. Besides the strong elocutionary and instrumental sections, the soprano and mezzosoprano solos were heard, and the final in the men's scholarship was announced. The soprano,solo was won by Mrs I. Harmah, the mezzo-soprano solo by Miss Dorothy Cayford (Oamaru), and the men's scholarship. by Mr Eric Hill. .. ■ . •■ ._ The children's action chorus for 16 years and under was begun, Mrs Anita Oliver's juveniles performing. The final will be next Thursday night. A class of the open character sketch was also decided. * ~ In the ballet dance, operatic other than toe, Denise Peterson was very highly commended when she appeared in the under 10 years section on Thursday afternoon. The performance of Miss Lorraine Hoyne in the piano solo for girls of 14 years and under 16 on Thursday was, highly commended. They had the making of orators. The boys placed first and second were really outstanding, and the former infused a little more colour and variety into his rendering, to take the honours. READING AT SIGHT Men or women. Prose and poetry. Helen McGregor, Winnie Dowie, Elsie Kirkham and Enid Carter. " The judge remarked that it was very seldom that reciters made good readers. Some of the competitors were rather inclined to recite, and their readings lacked fluency. The winner was an excellent reader, and gave a very fluent rendering in both classes.

The judge said he was not very pleased with the section. The whole point of the matter had been that a number of the competitors had tried to force the humour. In the whole of the large section not one audience had laughed; audience reaction was essential The children should have tried to get'something from the recitation and not add to it. The judge said that, generally!speaking, the section danced well, but the standard on the whole was. not as good as that of the older! children. Their deportment was not all that it might have been. Operatic work was not to be taken lightly. DEMI-CHARACTER DANCE Fourteen years and over Mist Joan Walsh. 88 points .... 1 Miss Joan Lunam, 86 points .... 2 Miss Gwen Cox, 85 points .... 3 Very highly' commended: Miss Pamela Page. The judge said that the winner chose a gopd subject and danced very nicely. The second performer also chose a good subject and sustained the, character very well. The costume of the third had restricted, her action. TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME The attendances at the festival have' been most encouraging, and it is hoped the public will continue to support it in this manner. To-day will be the children's day. and the programmes will consist" of juvenile items. The programmes at the morning session at His Majesty's Theatre will consist of child's action songs, vocal trios for girls and boys, and character dances, and the afternoon orogramme will consist of 37 delightful child's action songs in character. At the Victoria Hall, prepared speeches and humorous recitations will be heard, and at the Concert Chamber there will be piano solos and duets, violin solos and vocal solos for girls. This evening's programme will include children's action and choruses, the recalls from the character dances for children, action . son "s, piano solos,. humorous recitations, vocal trios and violin solos heard during the day. The judges are rjarticularly nleased at the improved standard in all sections.*.
