THE TEACHING PROFESSION

ro THF EDITOR Sir,—Some comment may perhaps be allowed on your series of leaders culminating in /The Teaching Profession," of August 28. The Otago Daily Times is to be congratulated on its kindly interest in school teachers. It is unlikely that the public will forget that some school teachers have been conscientious objectors and that some other dangerous Fifth Columnists have evaded attention by refusing to salute the flag. In addition, the Times campaign may embarrass the Government, which assuredly would not relish the attention. Still, for the benefit of any "third-rate politician," or first-rate leader writer for that matter, who may cherish "doubts about teachers as a class, a copy of National Education is forwarded. It contains an incomplete list of school teachers on active service. The name of Nsw Zealand's latest V.C is missing, but perhaps the, Otago Daily Times will put aside its ruling passion and count the names. Could not this figure be compared with that for conscientious objectors and flag cranks? Besides, it would supply information, which must have escaped the notice of the Otago Daily Times, for an article' which could more worthily be headed "The Teaching Profession."—l am, etc.. - Third Rate.

Queenstown, August 28. [The list of members of the Educational Institute who are in the armed forces, as published in National Education, contains 346 names.—Ed. OD.T/I
