Tragic interest attaches to an . old photograph treasured by Mr J. Douglas, who has lived in Woolston, Christchurch, since he arrived from England as a boy of 10 in the Lady Jocelyn in 1879. It shows the Heathcote River in flood in 1886. In the middle of the river stands a horse and cart; the water is halfway up the horse’s side and over the floorboards of the cart, and a big black dog, apparently a retriever, stands on the seat. When the horse was brought to a standstill by the depth of water over the bridge the driver tried to get ashore, but was swept away and drowned. The (barking of the dog brought rescue for him, but a few minutes after the photograph was taken the flood rose above, the horse’s head, and it and the cart followed the driver downstream.
