£10,000,000 OBJECTIVE TOTAL NOW £6,000,000 (6.C.) ■, WELLINGTON. Adg. 28. An announcement that the contributions to the'£lo,ooo,ooo War Loan now exceeded £ 6,000,000 was made, in the House of Representatives to-night by the Minister of Finance, Mr W. To-day’s subscriptions included a further. £IOO,OOO from the Government Life Insurances £20,000 from the Guardian Trust, and £20.000 from the' North Island Motor Insurance Company. . .. Other districts in order were:—Wellington, £326,620; Otago, £205,160 (including £75,000 from the Dunedin Savings Bank); Canterbury, £134,710; Southland, £112,510 (a remarkable contribution in its way. commented Mr Nash); Wanganui and Taranaki, £102,340; Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay, £90,420; Waikato and Bay of Plenty. £38,360; Nelson, West Coast and Marlborough, £31.630. ;• “Does this House realise that the Battle, of the Atlantic is not yet won, that we may yet have to fight a Battle of Britain, that Russia and Germany , are locked in a deadly struggle and that our forces in the Middle East may yet have to fight greater battles? ” asked Mr W. P. Endean (Opposition, Remuera), appealing for support for the war loan. “I am 100 per cent, behind the Government in its war effort,” he said, “and if the people of New Zealand want to be free they should get behind it, too." An Imperative Need

Mr Endean said he considered that the civil expenditure of the country was too high, and might prejudice the Dominion’s war effort if the conflict lasted a long time. He urged the people to do their utmost tp. subscribe to the loan, as on the successful prosecution of the war depended the future of democracy.
