FIRE DANGER
SEQUEL TO AUCKLAND OUTBREAK BOARD WELCOMES INQUIRY (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 27. A decision to arrange a coroner’s inquiry into the fire which occurred in the premises of John Burns and Co., Ltd., was made unanimously by the Auckland Fire Board at its meeting today. The chairman (Mr J. J. Kingston) said the inquiry would probably be prolonged, and would deal generally with building construction, lifts, exits, and number of stairways, fire escapes and the governing by-laws, etc., and what citizens themselves could do to save property. Mr Kingston said the board welcomed the inquiry as a means of satisfying any uneasiness arising from the recent fire. He was satisfied that the brigade acted promptly and efficiently, and did all that it could be expected to do in the circumstances. The fire spread with unheard-of rapidity. The board decided to recommend to the Royal Humane Society that an award for bravery be made to the fourth officer of the brigade (Mr .R. Preston), and also decided to write to Mr R. McWhirter, whose life Mr Preston saved, commending him for his courage.
