Sudden Death.— An elderly man named James Wilson Young was found dead in his hut at Matakanui on Monday morning. Young, who was well known in the Matakanyi district, where he had resided for some 45 years, originally came to New Zealand from Scotland. So far as can be ascertained, he had no relatives in the Dominion. Golf.— ldeal weather prevailed for golf at the week-end, when the first round of the Nevill Memorial was played. The Weather.— This district escaped the stormy weather which prevailed in coastal areas during the week. With a heavy coating of snow on the mountains. heavy frosts have been experienced. nearly 20 degrees having been registered on several mornings. Op Sunday 21 degrees were recorded. The frosts, however, were followed by clear, sunny days. Patriotic Fund. —A community sing held in aid of the Patriotic Fund on Wednesday night resulted in the sum of £l4 being raised. A patriotic ball is to be held at Omakau on September .12.

Home Guard. —A half-day paraae of the Omakau Home Guard was held on Saturday. But the attendance was not up to the average. Physical drill and rifle exercises were carried out. An evening parade will be held on Monday next.
