MAORI CONCERT

RELIEF OF DISTRESS DELIGHTFUL ENTERTAINMENT An enjoyable programme of Maori music was presented to a large audience in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall last night by a party of Maoris from Karitane. The party, which was sponsored by Mr J. F. Himburg, on behalf of Messrs Chas. Begg and Co., was led by Messrs Tame Te Lloyd, R. Te Tau, R Parata and Hori Sparrow. A notable feature of the evening was the sale of ” V For Victory ” badges. The proceeds of the concert, and from the sale of badges produced the sum of £137 for the relief of distress in Great Britain. Miss Muriel Caddie’s Piano-accordion Band entertained the audience before the concert and during the interval. The actual programme commenced with the singing of “ God Defend New Zealand ’’ by the audience, and then In Maori by the Maori party. The items given by the Maoris were as follows:—Maori war song, " Whakapapa Koa Mai ’’ and Haka of Defiance; double poi dance with chorus, Haere, ra e Tama e ”; solos, R. Parata. " Pokare Haere Tonu Karitane,” and R. Te Tau, “ Maori Battalion song”: action songs, “ Ula Mai” and “ Kia Ora Hairapa duet by Ronga and Mona Te Tau, ,r Haere ra e Tama slow poi dance and chorus, “ Hokl, Hold tonu mal action songs, “Ave, Ave te Mai, Mai,” and “Ave Mama appeal, “ There’ll Always Be An England ”: song and chorus, “ Pokarekare hakas. “ Pakia,” and “ Tau Ka Tau.” The second half of the programme was as follows:—Action songs, " Tukituki ’’ and " Papakura songs and chorus, " E pari Ra ” and " Ruti Hepi poi waka or canoe poi: action songs, “ Whakarongo ’ and "Ake Au Maori war song and haka by R. Te Tau. “ Kamate long pot dance; action songs, “ Powhiri ” (a farewell song to the South Island Maori soldiers), and “ Hei, Aha Keitaku Uma a song 'and group poi; hakas, “Te iwi Maori, e ngunguru nei,” “ Whakarongo mal ” and “ Kamate, Kamate ”: farewell songs, “Po Atarau ” and “Arohuni.” . .
