Ferguson was reappointed the council's representative on the Vocational Guidance Association. The council considered letters from the deans of the Mining, Commerce, Dentistry and Law faculties, and the secretary of the Students' Association, regarding its request for the preparation of lists of students on active service. It was decided.to take all possible steps to ascertain the names of students serving overseas. . ' . The Dean of the Mining Faculty advised that the Federated Malay States Chamber of Mines' prize for 1940 had been awarded to Mr Dowl Foord for a paper on "Gravel Pumping in Otago. There was some discussion on a recommendation from the Professorial Board that the holiday on Anniversary Day should be discontinued for the period of the war. Dr Hercus expressed the opinion that the temporary abolition of the holiday so far as,the University was concerned would give a lead to the country, which should strain every sinew during the war.— Mr Wallace objected to Anniversary Day being chosen. On that day thej should honour the pioneers of the province and he did not think any purpose would be served by holding University classes on that day—Dr Fitzgerald said there were other holidays, Particularly at the end of the Easter ■week, that could be used.—The boaro s recommendation was approved.
