CHILDREN’S CLOTHES

OTAGO’S GIFTS APPRECIATED IN SCOTLAND appeal issued by mayor V The following letter has been received by the Mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) from the Cumbernauld Centre Women* Voluntary Services, dated April 26: “ I write to you as the representative of the people of Otago to thank you for a crate of children s clothes, which were received here yesterday. It touches us very much that you, so fax' away on the other side of .the world, should have sent us this help in our need. In the small parish-of Cumbernauld we already have 1700 evacuees, victims of the Clydeside raid of March 12 and 13. Some of the things you sent are being distributed among them, but they have mostly had things cent us by the American Red Cross, so we shall be able to keep most of what you sent to use when the blitz comes to Glasgow, as come it must some time. With 1700 evacuees in our homes it will be impossible to house any more people permanently in this parish, but when Jerry comes to Glasgow—if he gets there, which he has not so far—we shall have to open all our church and other hails as rest centres and feed and clothe people there for a few days till they can be taken elsewhere. For this the children’s things you have sent will be most useful, as with-a. change of clothes one can keep the children clean arid also replace things that have got damaged in the bombing.—With many thanks from yours faithfully (signed) Jean Burns, centre leader.” More Garments Wanted The Mayor states that up to date the New Zealand Lady Galway Guild -has sent 820 cases of clothing to the High Commissioner for New Zealand in London; Mr W. J. Jordan, for distribution, and has a further 150 cases now ready for consignment. The members of the guild desire further supplies of used garments or scrap materials which may be used bv the workers of the-guild for 'remaking into garments,.children!* clothing, or bed coverings. The Mayor said the used clothing must not be worn out, and it must be delivered in a clean condition. The Mayoress appealed to the public -for further liberal supplies of clothing or scrap material for the purpose indicated. Supplies should be delivered to the office T qf ;the; Council, Municipal lane (next Tows Hall).
