Y.W.C.A. AT MILTON

TO THE EDITOR Sir,—Another ” white elephant ” in the form of a Y.W.C.A. is being launched upon the people of Milton. I understand that the Bruce Woollen Company has generously provided the building, but the people of the town are expected to contribute to the upkeep of this organisation, and we are to expect the collectors during the present month for subscriptions of 5s membership, or one guinea sustaining membership. Now, Sir. at the present time people are doing their utmost to help the war effort by contributing to the national savings funds, patriotic funds, the Red Cross Society, and also by sending private parcels to our soldiers, all of which we count a privilege as well as a duty. Our war effort is first and foremost, and 1 think with many other people that this Is the wrong time to introduce any organisation which is, not sensupporting. The people here, numbering 15Q0. are overburdened with the maintenance of the existing societies. I understand the Idea of the Y.W.C.A. here is to provide accommodation for mill employees whose homes are rot in.this town. .If so, why not an ordinary boarding house, run on business lines? The argument Is, 1 know, that the Y.W.C.A. provides the religious background, with recreation, etc., but surely the churches in Milton, of which there are sufficient, could, if they are functioning correctly, provide all that is necessary.—l am. etc., Econojnlst.
