RUGBY FOOTBALL NORTH OTAGO UNION MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE Mr M. F. Woodward (president) occupied the chair at the weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the North Otago Rugby Union last night. Mr H. E. Wedde was appointed a trustee of the union, owing to the resignation of Mr J. Crowley. The secretary (Mr C. G. Melkle) reported that the covers for school footballs had come to hand, and these would be distributed without delay to all schools in the district. The Puntroon Club wrote expressing regret at the excessive number of casualties during the games on May 30, and gratitude for the help rendered to an injured member of the Puntroon team by the St. John Ambulance men.—Motions of sympathy were passed with lan Geddes and V. Bain, Injured players, and best wishes were expressed for their speedy recovery, Mr Pouglas M. National Reserve There was an excellent parade of the National .Military Reserve on Saturday afternoon, the company parading to the railway station to do honour to the soldiers returning to camp The authorities report that the age of married men eligible for enlistment has now been lowered to 40 years, and expect .that this will stimulate recruiting. There has been a good response to the request for bags, especially from the South School children, but the company’s requirements have not been satisfied yet. Sergeant-major H. M. S Bradbury has returned to Oamaru aftef an intensive course of training at Burnham, and it is reported that another school for n.c.o.’s will be held in Burnham in the near future.

ARMED FORCES APPEAL BOARD SITTING AT OAMARU The Armed Forces Appeal Board (Messrs J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., J. Price and H. Hodgson) commenced its sitting at Oamaru yesterday afternoon. Mr P. S. Anderson appeared for the Crown, and Mr J. D. McLeod (chairman of the Primary Production Council) gave a general survey of the position of farming in North Otago. Mr Bartholomew said there was apparently some confusion as to the effect of an adjournment sine die, but such an adjournment did not give freedom from obligation, and the cases could be brought before the board at any time If necessary. The only appeals finally disposed of were those allowed. The following appeals were dealt with;— , „ „ ... . John Kelland (Mr J. E. Farrell) in respect of Percy Ewan Kelland, a shepherd and high-country musterer, on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship—Adjourned sine die. The Director of National Service (Mr C. CASA NOVA SCHOOL .SUCCESSFUL GALA The gala held last Saturday in the Casa Nova School grounds proved highly successful, and a considerable amount was raised to assist the North End Hall Committee and the North School Committee in carrying out different projects, The gala was opened by the Deputy Mayor (Mr A. R. Tail). and all the stalls and side-shows did capital business. ST. LUKE’S PARISH ARCHDEACON'S REPORT In his report to the parishioners of St Luke’s Parish, for presentation at the annual meeting to-night, Archdeacon J. D Russell acknowledges, inter alia, the loyal and capable assistance of the curate, the Rev. A. H. Blackburn, and the help of the Revs. A. W Stace, F. L. Irwin and D. H. Dorman on occasions during the year. He paid a tribute to all the church workers who had given loyal service He acknowledged the great assistance given by the guilds, St Luke’s contributing £75 and Newborough £lO, and expressed gratitude to the Sunday school teachers and Bible class leaders. The Mothers' Union was a flourishing organisation which gave much practical help. They appreciated the good work of the organist and choir. Archdeacon Russell traversed the work of the other organisations both in town and in the country, and quoted the church statistics as follows: —Baptisms 53, marriages 20, burials 41, whilst 39 candidates had been confirmed, and there were about 190 young people in the Sunday schools and Bible classes, with 25 teachers. FELL DOWN STEPS ELDERLY MAN’S DEATH Mr William Cameron, an inmate of Victoria Home, aged 93 years, fell down the steps at the home early yesterday morning, and was admitted to the Oamaru Public Hospital.
