TRAFFIC HAZARDS

TROOPS MARCHING AT NIGHT SAFETY MEASURE SUGGESTED The necessity for protecting troops on the march at night from traffic hazards was briefly discussed last night at the monthly meeting of the executive of the Automobile Association (Otago). The president (Mr P. W. Breen) read a letter from the Transport Department which had been forwarded by the South Island Motor Union. the letter suggested that danger to troops marching at' night could be minimised considerably, if not actuallv eliminated, if a white light of some description were carried at the head of the column and a red one at the rear. , „ ~ Mr Breen said he considered the idea a good one. When marching at night, particularly on country roads, khakiclad troops were difficult to see. It was decided to reply requesting the union to forward on to the department the Otago Association’s approval of the suggestion. In addition to the president, there were present; Messrs J. L. Passmore, G. T. Thorn, H. S. Reid, G. Adess, C. W. Sundstrum, J. Caldwell. W. J. Mclnnes. W. A. Jenkins. G. W. Ferens, T. Y. Turner. H. L. Sprosen, J. G. Souness. and J. Y. Love. Lighting Restrictions

Replying to a suggestion by the association that a conference should be held with representatives of the City Council regarding lighting restrictions, the two clerk, Dunedin, wrote stating that when the terms of the regulations were known the council would agree to such a conference being called.— The chairman said that the regulations governing the restrictions had been gazetted, but they would not be brought into force until the necessary signposts had been erected. It seemed, however, that in terms of a request previously made by the association the council might, in the meantime, have had the kerbing on all street corners painted white. A letter repeating this request had recently been forwarded to the council, but nothing had been done.—lt was decided that the council should again be written to. asking that immediate action be taken in the matter. Membership

Fifty-three new members were elected, making the membership roll at date 6153.
