PUT OfJ A SPIRITUAL UNIFORM OF SACRIFICE—NOW. NO SEED CAN GROW. UNTIL IT IS PLANTED—SOW THE SEED OF SACRIFICE. CHURCHES AND FIGHTERS CHURCHES AND FIGHTERS The last war gave us Studdert Kennedy, affectionately known as “ WOODBINE WILLIE.” Who is there to-day? The answer can be readily given—every Church of every denomination has been waiting for an opportunity to prove that Dunedin has scores of ■•‘Woodbine Willies”—and here, in this “Churches and Fighters” Appeal, is the opportunity. GO TO IT. and good luck. In Dunedin there are Church leaders, daring, compelling, eloquent, who will lift up their voices and preach the need of “ Comforts for Fighters.” The need is urgent, the cause is great, the time is limited. In the words of our Imperial leader, Winston Churchill, “ GO TO IT.” THE FOUNDER OF RELIGION— The Founder of Religion voiced a simple appeal of 18 words: “ Therefore, all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them.” Those words appeal to reason, particularly at the present time. It may be argued by Church people that “ a truly patriotic people will not need to be tempted to give; they need only to be asked.” A SPIRITUAL. UNIFORM— The magnificent work of our fighters demands that every Church member puts on " a mental, a spiritual uniform of sacrifice, unselfishness and determination." No less is required for the victory that must be won and for the right use of that victory. It is noble to preach against war; to do all in our power to prevent war. We can work to no finer end than that of universal peace and brotherliness. But—and it’s a big but—we are yet a long distance from universal peace and a longer distance from universal brotherhood. • TRUST IN GOD—KEEP YOUR POWDER DRY Cromwell’s admonition is not yet out of date. He said: ‘‘Trust in God, but keep your powder dry.” We'may trust in God and work for peace and hate war; but, if we have the wisdom that warrants us In calling ourselves Intelligent, Christian human beings, we must, be prepared to resist force with force to the uttermost defence of' our homes, our dearly-won rights, our country, and our fighting forces. This simply means that we must be ready to meet aggression when it touches us. AGGRESSION OF BRUTxVL NAZI-ISM The aggression of brutal Nazi-ism has touched us—our soldiers, our sailors, our airmen, and our nurses are standing shoulder to shoulder in the grim fight for Christian freedom. .DIRECT FORMS 0F GIVING £6OOO is needed for Comforts .for Fighters before the end of the present month. This special appeal has been launched by the Otago Provincial Patriotic Council because it is felt that many Church groups have had no opportunity (as groups) of assisting the “ Comforts for Fighters ” Fund. It is realised that many people, rightly or wrongly, object to certain methods of raising money for our fighters. This appeal gives an opportunity for the use of more direct forms of giving. Realising the pressing need, it is felt that ministers and their congregations will gladly rise to the occasion. If ministers gave a sermon, not merely an intimation, on furtherance of the money needed for ” Comforts for Fighters,” is it felt that the congregations will take full advantage of the chance to do something really worthwhile from the Christian viewpoint. AND HERE ENDETH THE APPEAL.—Give, as you’ve never given before. Remember: So much is needed for those who are doing so much for those who stay at home. GIVE and keep on giving. It is the least you can do. THE NEED IS AS GREAT AS THE CAUSE SOW THE SEED OF SACRIFICE, GIVE! PROPERTIES FOR SALE REID’S FOR REAL ESTATE SELLING FOR OVER 50 YEARS. Oil HA—ST.
