NEW ZEALAND AND THE WAR
TO THE EDITOR Sir.—Mr Webb, Minister of Labour, said recently: ” I say emphatically that the workers of this country are pulling their weight splendidly.” The following day we were told that 150 men of the Westfield works had decided to down tools and have a day at the races. This war effort would cost them a fair amout in loss of pay and possibly a lot more in betting. Simultaneously with this Minister’s ironical and utterly unreliable assurance, the people are suffering the appalling losses of Crete. Only a few days previously we were advised that the men of the ‘three State coal mines had ” struck ” for a day because the Government’s transport arrangements had been neglected in respect of certain “ wet-time men. If the Minister is the best man the Government can find for the job it is high time we had a change.—l am. etc., Dunedin, June 9. John Gilpin.
