' Town Board.—The first meeting of the newly-elected Town Board was held on Wednesday, and was attended by Commissioners • Colhoun, Dickie, Hughes, Robertson, and Walker. Mr O. Hughes was elected chairman arid Mr Alex Walker deputy chairman. It was decided to support a resolution from the Lake County Council urging the abolition of the 40hour week in order to speed up the war effort. The secretary of the local Emergency Precautions Scheme Committee wrote stating that the West Taieri Boy Scouts had been attached as messengers to the various sections in the E.P.S. and as these boys were under 16 years of age they would"require to be covered by insurance. It.was decided that the cost of insuring these boys should be borne by the board. An application from Mr C. Hyslop to lease the pound for the purpose of grazing a horse used for the Mounted Rifles, was left in the hands of the chairman and clerk to arrange. A notification was received from the Town Clerk, Dunedin, stating that the requirements of the Government departments for non-ferrous metals had been satisfied in the meantime, and that further quantities collected should be sold to local manufacturers. " Comforts for Soldiers" Appeal.—The secretary announced at the last meeting of the Patriotic Committee that the sum of £lB4 18s had been collected in the district for this appeal. St. John Ambulance.—After the class had finished stretcher work on Tuesday night, the members said good-bye to Mr E. Williamson, who is leaving the district, and Dr Wylie made presentations to him and to Mrs Williamson and Master Williamson. Mrs A. Bathgate spoke on behalf of the Nursing Division, and Mr Walmsley on behalf of the men. The five V.A.'s from the Nursing Division have just completed a week's night training at the Dunedin Hospital. A class in home nursing will commence on June 10. All the members who sat for the first aid examination passed. Home Guard.—The Home Guard paraded last Sunday. After a short Divine service, conducted by the Rev. Mr McKenzle, the members proceeded to " The Downs." where manoeuvres were carried out. It is the intention of the Home Guard to meet on Saturday afternoons and Sundays alternately.
