RECRUITING WEEK
NEWFOUNDLAND’S EFFORT TRIBUTE FROM MINISTERS (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) RUGBY. May 28. Newfoundland's recruiting week it now in,full swing, .and has received support from the Dominions Secretary, Viscount Crairiborhe, ’ and the Minister of War and Transport,' Lord Leathers. Lord Cranborne telegraphed: “From the outbreak- of the present war the people of . Newfoundland: have shown a desire to take the fullest, possible part in the fight in which the Empire is engaged against forces ranged on the side of aggression and destruction of liberty. The signal assistance which Newfoundland has given in providing men for the fighting service, the mercantile marine, and for forestry work in this country has been of the greatest value. We have been proud to welcome these volunteers to the shores of the Mother Country, and we know they have been giving every proof of the characteristic hardwood courage of the men of Newfoundland. I have no doubt that this assistance will continue to the fullest extent which the resources of the island permit.” ■ Lord Leathers, in his message, said: “A large number of Newfoundland seamen and fishermen have already joined the merchant navy and. are helping to win the war by arduous and dangerous services 'in merchant ships. We have greatly welcomed that help, but we need still more. Our victory depends on 'the men of the merchant navy and on their ability to bring this country precious cargoes needed for every part of our war effort. A seaman, with all his skill in overcoming the dangers of the sea, can do nothing more. We must have men as well as ships, and I appeal for still more Newfoundlanders to answer that call.”
