HOURS OF WORK
BASIS OF EXTENSION WAR EFFORT THE TEST STATEMENT BY, MR WEBB (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, May 28. " If there is any industry in which a speeding-up of production is necessary for the war effort I have no hesitation in saying that the Industrial Efficiency Council will not quibble for a minute over an extension of hours which are economically justified,*' the Minister of Labour (Mr P. C. Webb) said in a telephone interview with the Press to-night. Reports that a seven-day three-shift week was to be introduced in a number of industries were referred to the Minister, who was in Auckland.
" I have not heard of any move in that general direction.*' Mr Webb replied. "Anv Epplications for extensions of hours beyond those provided in awards have to go before the Industrial Efficiency Council, and an extension will then depend on the merits of each case. The council listens to the evidence of all sides, and practically all its decisions so far have been unanimous. Any justifiable proposition for an extension of working hours has never been turned down by the council and in no case have the workers quibbled if they felt that they were contributing to the ultimate success of our struggle. " But we are not going to extend hours just for the fun of it," the Minister concluded. "The extension must be merited for production for the war effort."
