MAN-POWER COMMITTEE APPEALS AGAINST SERVICE OAMARU SITTING CONCLUDED The Oamaru sitting of the Man-power Committee was concluded yesterday morning, when appeals against service overseas were heard. The committee consisted of Messrs D. C. Cameron (chairman), W. R. Clarke and J. C. H. Somerville, and appeals were heard as follows: —On the grounds of public interest and undue hardship, J. H. Taylor, W. J. C. Elder and D. K. McKenzie, adjourned sine die; E. J. D. O'Dcnnell (undue hardship only), adjourned sine die, subject to the appellant joining the Home Guard within two weeks; W. J. Chappell for J. Varley, adjourned sine die, subject to the appellant joining the National Reserve within two weeks; J. F. Kiely, W. J. Power for C. H. McDonald (public interest only), A. H. Kennedy, Mrs H. Dillon for E. F. Dillon (undue hardship only), D. J. Manson for R. J. Anderson, and F. Ludeman for N. E. Collins (public interest only)— appeals dismissed subject to the appellants not being called up before June 1. On the grounds of undue hardship, J. J. Mcllhatton was released from service until June 30, and G. L. Wright, on the grounds of public interest, was released until June 30, subject to his being released from camp on August 31. Volunteers for overseas service appealed as follows:—On the grounds of public interest, Mr Hutchison (father of the appellant) appealed for G. A. THE EMPIRE'S CAUSE SERGEANT M. E. MULHERN Sergeant Michael Edwin Mulhern, who was killed in action in the Middle East, was born at Geraldine, and was 39 years of age. He was married to Phyllis, the youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Couper, Wharfe street, Oamaru. Sergeant Mulhern was employed by the New Zealand Railways Department, and was stationed in various towns, including Oamaru, and he enlisted from Christchurch, going overseas with the 23rd Battalion, second echelon of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He spent about seven months in England before being transferred to the Middle East. He took a keen interest in sport, and was a footballer and a prominent cycle road-racer, taking part in several road races between Waimate and Christchurch. H-s was also a member of the Oamaru Railway Miniature Rifle Club, and of the Oamaru Boating Club. Private R. Farrell Private Robert (" Scotty") Farrell, formerly of Weston, who is reported to have been wounded, was for several seasons a prominent member of the Athletic Football Club's senior team and a North Otago representative player. He resided with his sister at Weston. ITEMS OF INTEREST IN AND ABOUT TOWN Thcosophical Lectures.—Mr Geoffrey Hodson, who gave lectures in Oamaru recentlv under the auspices of the Theosophica'l Society, will visit the town again on May 26, for further lectures. Farmers' Union.—The North Otago branch of the New Zealand FarmersUnion will hold its annual meeting in the Lyric Boardroom on Friday, May 23, at 1.30 p.m. PERSONAL Ministerial The Minister of Health. Mr A. H. Nordmeyer, will.be in Oamaru for the weekend, and will be available to meet his constituents at the Social Security Office between 2.30 and 4 p.m. to-morrow. Mr C. M. Stubbs, a son of Dr E. S. Stubbs. has received advice that he has been accepted for training with the Fleet Air Arm. Private R. K. Gemmell. who has been called up for overseas service, was a leader of the Columba Bible class and a member of the Columba Drama Club. He was met by members of the two organisations on Wednesday night. The Rev. <W. Lawson Marsh presided, and spoke of the guest's services, and extended best wishes on behalf of both organisations. Mrs R. A. McDowell (Drama Club) and Geoff. Elvidge (Bible classes) made presentations to him. Private Gemmell has also been entertained by Mr and Mrs Alan Rudduck, the Oamaru Amateur Swimming Club, and the firm of which he was formerly an employee, the Oamaru branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company. AMUSEMENTS MAJESTIC THEATRE " The Blue Bird.''—Ranking among the most beautiful films that have ever been produced, " The Blue Bird " is to be shown to-night. This colour fantasy from the pen of Maurice Maeterlinck is entrancing entertainment, presented by an extremely capable cast. OBITUARY MR GEORGE SNADDEN The death occurred at Hastings recently of Mr George Snadden, who for many years after 1879 was a well-known resident of Oamaru, where he was proprietor of a tailoring establishment. Mr Snadden was active in the public life of the town, and was for some time a member of the Oamaru Borough Council. He left Oamaru about 16 years ago to live in Tapanui, and afterwards resided with his son at Hastings. Mrs J. P. M. Sellar The death occurred on May 10, at Auckland, of Mrs J. P. M. Sellar, at the age of 83 years. Born at Cupar, Fifeshire, Scotland, Mrs Sellar arrived at Port Chalmers with her parents 10 years later in the sailing ship Viola, and the family settled in the Oamaru district. Mrs Sellar removed to Hawera, and subsequently took up residence in Auckland. She was the widow of Mr Thomas Sellar, of Oamaru. Mr R G. Sellar, of Remuera, is a son, and Mrs T. H. Roseveare, wife of the Very Rev. T. H. Roseveare, of Tauranga, is a daughter. Mrs Sellar was a sister of Mrs G. M. Gardiner, of Oamaru. SHIPPING ACTIVITIES PORT OF OAMARU High Water.—May 16: 7.9 a.m. and 7.37 p.m. Coastal Movements The Wainui is expected to load about Wednesday, May 28, for Wellington, Napier, and Gisborne, via ports. The Waipahi will load about Tuesday, May 20, for Wellington, Nelson, and New Plymouth, via ports. The Waipiata, from Auckland, is due about Wednesday, May 21. She will load for Wellington and Auckland, via ports.
