ATTACK ON CONVOY
BRITISH AIRMAN’S GALLANTRY
RUGBY, May 13.
Six gallant and successful attacks on a large and strongly-escorted enemy convoy last month gained the bar to the D.F.C. for Acting Squadron Leader L. V. E. Atkinson. In spite of intense anti-aircraft fire from escorting vessels, he delivered an attack on the largest merchant vessel, scoring two direct hits on the stern. The formation he was leading completed its decisive action, in which three of the four ships were set on fire. One was left sinking. Squadron Leader Atkinson served as a bombardier? in the Canadian Artillery Militia from 1930 to 1932. The bar to the D.F.M. goes to Sergeant C. F. Rawnsley, who, as wireless operator, has assisted his pilot in the destruction of at least seven enemy aircraft.
