RUGBY FOOTBALL MEETING OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE VISIT OF OTAGO TEAM The Otago Rugby Union notified the Management Committee of the North Otago Union last night that an Otago team would be sent to Oamaru on June 2 to play a North Otago team. The offer was accepted. The sevcn-a-side tournament set down for that date will be held over. . Mr M. F. Woodward (president) occupied the chair. The Windsor Club advised that it would field a team on Saturday. The entry was 3CCGpt€d. The oid Boys’ Club advised the withdrawal of its Third Grade team, and Athletic the withdrawal of its Third Grade team and the entering of a Fourth Grade team.—lt was pointed out that only two school teams would be left in the Third Grade competition, and it was agreed to write to the clubs concerned, asking representatives to meet the Management Committee and discuss the matter. Athletic, No. 3, 1.15 p.m. THE AIR FORCE BAND ANOTHER BRILLIANT EXHIBITION The band of the Royal New Zealand Air Force gave another brilliant display of marching and playing in Thames street yesterday afternoon, when a large_ crowd was present. The band marched from the southern end of the main street to the Opera House, where if. rendered the march "Washington Greys/’ A platform was erecteJ on the Town Hall steps, and on it were the Mayor (Mr L. J. K. Familton) Flight Lieutenant Gladstone Hill (conductor of the band) and Squadron Leader McArthur. , ~. The Mayor emphasised the work of the Aw Force in this struggle. Many local bovs had earned distinction already, and he felt sure that those who were to follow would cc the same. He spoke of the Empire training scheme, where many hundreds and thousands of men were being trained to man the greatest air force the world would ever know. The citizens appreciated the work of the air toice, and he made an appeal for recruits Later, the Mayor thanked the band for the Way in which it had raised £loo in Oamaru for the " Comforts for Fighters Fund, and stated that Oamaru had reached its quota of £2400 for the fund. . Yesterday afternoon the band visited the Oamaru Public Hospital, where it rendered an enjoyable programme for the patients. HIDDLESTON Cabled advice received in Oamaru reports the death at Geelong, Victoria, of Mr Thomas H. S. Hiddleston. B° rn in Dumfries. Scotland, he came to New Zealand to take over the position of designer at the Oamaru Woollen Mills, where he remained for several years, and later removed to the Mosgiel Woollen Mills In 1926 he left New Zealand to join the staff of the Federal Woollen Mills at Geelong. Owing to ill-health. Mr Hiddleston resigned his position a year ago. His enthusiasm for Association football earned him the nickname of “ Soccer.” He was an ardent angler. He married a daughter of the late Mr Richard Willetts, and his wife, two sons, and three daughter survive him. The younger son is serving with the Royal Australian Air Force in Canada. ITEMS OF INTEREST IN AND ABOUT TOWN Agricultural and Pastoral.—ln the list of names of the Committee of Management elected at the annual meeting of the North Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association on Fridav last the names of Messrs R. C. Meek, T. Portis and G. S. Pringle were inadvertently omitted. Theosophy and Christianity.—Mr Harry Banks, of Auckland, gave another lecture in the Peter Pan Theatre on Sunday afternoon, when he had for his sub* ject, " Theosoohy and Christianity. He said that Christianity was not regarded with an unfriendly eye by theosophy, but, on the contrary, It was accepted as the latest presentation in time, of the one wisdom-religion which had existed in the world. Many theosophists had found new illumination in their studies of the Christian faith, and many had been won back to an ardent faith in the sublime truths of Christianity. National Military Reserve.—There has been a good response to the National Military Reserve’s appeal for bags of various sorts, timber, and barbed wire, but more bags are still wanted. On Saturday, the reserve was engaged on the defensive works, and finished all work that could be done with the bags on hand. The signallers. under Sergeant J. F. Ericson, are carrying out intensive work. Concert at Weston—On Wednesday night a large party of members of the Savage Club, led by Great Chief J. MacMillan. visited Weston, where they presented a concert to a large Mr Laney (chairman of the Patriotic Committee) extended a welcome to tire party, and Mr W. Falloon (treasurer) also spoke. After a fine programme, dancing was held, music being supplied by the Savage Club ’ orchestra, and extras by Mr H. Portis. Mr W. Burdctt was M.C. DESTROYED BY FIRE HOUSE IN COLLEGE LANE At 11.50 p.m. on Sunday the Oamaru Volunteer Fire Brigade received a call to a fire in College lane, which is beyond Waitaki avenue, and thus outside the fire district. On arrival, the brigade found that the house, which w r as occupied by Mr J. McKendry, had been completely destroyed, and all that could be done was to extinguish the embers with some water from a pool in an adjacent paddock. A Further Outbreak Whilst the brigade was away, another call was received at the station to the Welcome Cafe, adjoining the North Otago Farmers’ Co-operative Association’s premises in Thames street, and the brigade arrived on the scene just in time to effect a good save. The outbreak originated in the kitchen. The cafe is occupied by H. J. Schimanski, and the premises are owned by the Misses Robins, of Exe street. MANCHESTER UNITY N.G. Bro. M. Tonkin presided over a fair attendance of members and visitors at the fortnightly meeting held last Thursday night. Bro. H. Couper (Wellington) responded to the visitors’ toast and conveyed fraternal greetings from the Wellington district. P.G. Bro. W. Couper expressed the pleasure he gained in visiting the juvenile lodge which he helped to found nine years ago. In conclusion, Bro.
