DEATH OF CENTENARIAN
MRS ANN HUBBARD LONG RESIDENCE AT WAIMATE (Snecial) WAIMATE, May 12 Alter a short illness Mrs Ann Hubbard died to-day at the home, of a daughter. Mrs T. E George. Waimate in her 103rd year. In spite of her advanced age, Mrs Hubbard enjoyed good health until recently. With the .sturdy independence of the pioneers she insisted on living at her cottage, her home for 60 years, until four years ago, when she was persuaded to take up residence with her daughter. Mrs Hubbard was born ta Foulsham, England, in 1839. and with her husband and family was living in Norfolk when Mr George Hubbard decided to try his fortune in the younj country of New Zealand. With their six children. Mr and Mrs Hubbard embarked on the sailing vessel Peeres* on July 24. 1874, and. after four months of wearisome travel, arrived at Lyttelton. They transhipped for Timam, where they landed in surf boats. . The Hubbard family at first settled in Thnaru. but some years later they came to the Waimate district. wher« Mr Hubbard took up the position of manager of Mr Leonard Price’s estate at Downlands. Five years later Mr Hubbard invested his savings in a farm just outside the growing town of Wai» mate, and since that time until cently Mrs Hubbard had lived at th* little cottage on the holding. . lift Hubbard died in 1919.' Of the family of four sons and eight daughters, tvyb sons' and five daughters survive and are resident in New Zealand, three of the daughters in Waimate.
