FEWER MOTOR IMPORTS
A DRASTIC DECREASE A further di’astic decrease in the motor importation figures for the first quarter of 1941, compared with those for the same period last year and the preceding year, is shown in statistics prepared by the Comptroller of Customs. For the three months ended Marcji 31 only 23 vehicles of all kinds were imported, the value being £16,847, or £148,288 less than the value of the 894 vehicles imported in the previous period. In the same quarter of 1939 a total of 8882 vehicles, valued at £1.539,407. was imported. The majority of the vehicles imported, both assembled and unassembled. were commercial types. There were 16 in this category, valued at £13,441. Of this total imports from the United Kingdom numbered seven, and were valued at £10,501. The only other exporter was Canada, whose nine vehicles were valued at £2940. Only seven private motor cars arrived in New Zealand from all sources during the three months, the value being £3406. These included six from the United Kingdom and one from the United States. Thirteen of the total number of vehicles imported arrived unassembled, the other 10 being assembled on arrival.
