At the May meeting of the Karitane Institute, Mrs Kennedy presided. The motto was: “ It takes a hundred men to make an encampment, but one mother can make a home.” and the roll call was “ Sing, or recite something about mother.” The competitions resulted: Something made from a sugar bag— Mrs Tubman 1, and Mrs Peden 2; Premier bloom—Mrs Tubman 1, Mrs Taiaroa 2. The social half-hour took the form of a farewell to a member who is leaving the district. The hostesses were Mrs Fricker and Miss R. Harper. The meeting of the Stirling Institute held on May 7, was presided over by Mrs W. Logie. A comprehensive report of the annual meeting of the South Otago Federation was given by Mrs Farquharson. Mrs Cuthbertson was thanked for making the Anzac wreath. The proceeds of the card parties and also 6d monthly per member are to go towards soldiers’ parcels. The roll call was “A Proverb.” The Golden Thread talk. “ Count your blessings,” was given by Mrs Coatsworth. The competition. “Wear something to represent a song.” resulted: Mrs J. B. McKinlay 1. Miss Ingle 2. Miss Newman gave an interesting demonstration on cane trays meriting well deserved thanks expressed by Mrs Jordan. The motto was "Have a heart that never hardens, a temper that never tires, and a touch that never hurts.” A successful patriotic concert and dance organised by the Tomahawk Institute was held in the Glencairn Hall on Monday night. The president, Mrs Saunders, welcomeo the audience, and Mrs R. B. Mathieson presented a shoulder spray to the organiser, Miss Gwenda Burt. Those taking part were: Misses Gwenda Burt and Ngila Siowley and Messrs Dick Moloney, Aubrey Clark, Ernest Fish, Mervyn Sarginson and William Stevenson. The accompanist was Mr A. Pettitt. Mr Eggars supplied the dance music, and an instrumental item was given by Messrs Stokes and Thompson. Mr R. Collins, on behalf of the local Patriotic Committee, thanked the performers and the Women’s* Institute for their effort.
At the April meeting of the Eveline Institute Mrs Sproat presided. The roll call was “ Sugestions for New Programmes." Mrs T. Johnston read an address from home and country by the Dominion president, and the delegate (Mrs Coutts) reported on the annual meeting of the North Otago Federation. Duets were pleasingly rendered by Mesdames Bartlett and Dickson. Miss Robins. A.C.E. tutor, gave a talk and demontration on “ Salads.” Proceeds from a bring-and-buy sales table went to the Comforts for Fighters’ Fund. The competitions resulted: Handworked linen handkerchief—Mrs Mays 1. Mrs Drummond 2; potato scones—Mrs Drummond 1, Mrs M. Hedges 2, The hostesses were Mesdames Willetts, Williams. 1 Wright, Woods. Allan, and Young.
