In Sydney the names Fairfax and Herald are synonymous. J. F. Fairfax's JOHN FAIRFAX is the biography of the Warwickshire man who, arriving in Sydney in 1838 with his wife and three children, and £5 in his pocket, within a few years had become joint owner of the Sydney Morning Herald. It was already a valuable property, which he, his sons and grandsons, were to develop into; a great institution. The formal history of the Herald was told in an elaborate centenary history ten years: ago: This beaiitifully produced book is primarily an account of the Fairfax family's hundred-year association with the newspaper. But the imprint of John Fairfax's vigorous, upright personality is y so indelibly stamped upon the . Herald that the volume is also an intimate chronicle of .the , growth of this oldest and most famous of Australian newspapers. The book has pleasant decorations by Adrian Feint.
