CROQUET

OTAGO TOURNAMENT The twelfth annual Otago croquet tournament was opened yesterday morning at Logan Park in glorious sunshine. Mrs J. McDonald, president of the Otago Croquet Association, welcomed the Mayor, Mr A, H. Allen, and Mrs Allen, also visiting and local players. The Mayor congratulated the association on again being able to open the tourney with a good entry, including many visitors, whom he hoped would have a pleasant stay in the city. Mrs Allen, playing the first hoop, declared the tourney open. For first games some good croquet was witnessed, though the keenness of the lawns together with a gusty wind in the afternoon made play a little difficult. There was only one very long match, which took just on six hours to complete, all others were completed in three hours or less. The following are the results of play:— A Grade Champion Doubles.—First round: Mesdames Strang and Gerard (Invercargill) 26, Mesdames Buchler and Halllday (Punga) 16; Mesdames Halstead and Lawn (Punga) 26, Mrs Watson (Oooho) and Miss Collinson (Christchurch) 15. Handicap Singles First round: Mrs Nicholls (Christchurch) defeated Mrs Lawn (Punga) 26—11, Mrs Mitchell (Cromwell) defeated Mrs Knox (Watea) 26—21, Mrs Dcrrett (Christchurch) defeated Mrs Wilson (Watea) 26—21, Mrs Corbet (Invercargill) defeated Mrs Beck (Logan Park) 26—14. Mixed Doubles First round: Mesdames Rankin and McKinlay defeated Mesdames Jellcy and Newell 26—12. Second round: Mesdames Derrett and Lee (Christchurch) defeated Mesdames .Tohnsen and Powley (Leith) 26—9, Mesdamos Keen and Knowles (Invercargill) defeated Miss Bell and Mrs Gordon (Christchurch) 26—8. B GRADE Champion Singles First round: Mrs Jones (Christchurch) defeated Mrs Flynn (Logan Park) 26 —8. Mrs Hardy (Cromwell) defeated Mrs Sewell (St. Clair) 26—18, Mrs Andrew (Christchurch) defeated Mrs Portman (Logan Park) 26 —11. The following is the draw for this morning:—At Logan Park at 9 o’clock—Mesdames Millin and Brown v. Mrs Robinson and Murray, Mesdames Knox and Henry v. Mesdames Horn and Haig, Mesdames Rankin and Beck v. Mesdames Jelley and Mitchell, Mesdames Johnsen and Powley v, Mesdames J. H. and G. W. Guest. Mesdames James and Landels v. Mesdames Shand and Steel, Mesdames Barron and Milne v. Mesdames Jones and Suckling, Mrs Lawn and Mrs Hercus v. Miss Collinson and Mrs Penman.—At Watea, at 9.30 —Mesdames Gray and White v.
