PETROL WASTE
TO THE EDITOR Sir, —In these days we are told that we are to use petrol sparingly, and this is wise advice when we are living in dangerous times and should be considering what is quite necessary and what should be kept in reserve. Here is a case where men who are engaged painting the Naseby Post Ofnce and should be staying in Naseby are taken in a Government car back and forward-from Ranfurly every day —a distance of 20 miles. If the homes of these men were in Ranfurly, it would be a different matter. But though there are two good hotels m Naseby and a good boarding house, they stay in Ranfuny and use petrol and tyres—tyres being another scarce item —to travel up and down every day. They have been three weeks, doing this now, and I understand it will take some time yet. A man who absolutely needs petrol for his business and living has to explain what it is used for and the number of miles he has to travel, and so on before he gets his petrol. If this case to which I refer is not one for the public to know and the Oil Fuel Controller to see into, I do not know where there is one.—l am, etc., Traveller.
[The above letter was referred to the Chief Postmaster, who states that the men are being conveyed from Ranfurly because no suitable accommodation was available at Naseby except at “exorbitant” rates. —Ed. O.D.T.J
