The Macandrew Bay Women's Institute held its first meeting for the year on Thursday evening last. Mrs Vickers who presided, welcomed members and friends. The motto was, "It is better to make mistakes than to make nothing at all." and the roll call, "A sewing hint." A very interesting demonstration was given by Miss Bracken, of the Hollywood Sphool of Dressmaking. The results of the competitions were as follows: —Best bloom, Mrs Butler, sen., 1. Mrs Dickinson 2; slice of Christmas cake, Mrs Stapleton 1, Mrs Vickers 2; child's frock costing not more than 3s. Mrs Turnbull 1. Supper was served by the following hostesses: —Mesdames Maule (committee hostess). Dickinson, Clifford, Butler, sen., and Butler, jun., Smallman, Turnbull. Lang, and Miss Churchill. •

Mrs Taylor presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Awamangu Women's Institute, held last Saturday. The roll call was "A person I would like to meet, and why." In the competition, "A savoury," Miss Hallum was first and Mrs D. Cochrane second. Mrs Taylor gave a demonstration on " Covered coat hangers." The social half-hour was conducted by Miss Craig and Miss Fraser, and Mrs J. Cochrane was hostess for the day.

At the Tuapeka Mouth Women's Institute's first meeting of the year there was a good attendance. Mrs McLeod presiding. The motto was: "Friends are like rays of sunshine on rainy days," and the roll call "My favourite flower, and why." One new member was welcomed; Mrs Crookley, of Clydevale. gave a very interesting talk on flowers, and also 10 minutes* talk on first aid. Wool was given out to members for knitting for the soldiers. The competitions resulted as follows: — Best collection of annuals—Mrs Brown 1; bran , biscuits—Mrs C. Keenan' 1. The hostesses were Misses N. Hayman. E. McGowan and M. Steel.
