RED CROSS ABUSED
MUNITIONS ON ITALIAN PLANE ROME STORY REFUTED (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, Feb. 5 : (Received Feb. 6. at 8.30 p.m.) A broadcast over the Italian radio against an alleged " boast" in a 8.8. C. programme than an Italian Red Cross aircraft Hying to Tobruk was shot down by a British fighter' was the subject of an inquiry and it was discovered that no such boast or claim was ever made by the 8.8. C What actually happened was that the Red Cross machine was not shot down, but was forced tc land by a British fighter. When this Italian aircraft was examined it was found to contain correspondence, ammunition and spare parts for a Breda 20-MM gun It will'■ be remembered'that Britain already had cause to complain of the illegal use made of the Red Cross by Germany, and a warning was given some time ago to both Germany and Italy that Red Cross aircraft or boats cannot be given immunity if they enter areas in which active operations nrf- in progress. -'--.., . • .. .'
