TRAVEL BY TRAIN
tO THE EDITOR Sir,—ln a letter in this morning’s issue a traveller complains about the want of ventilation in the first class carriages. I agree with him, and find the second class carriages more comfortable than those in the first class. I think, however, this touches a more important matter. Why should there not be one class only? . Every effort should be made to make the railways pay, and the second class carriages are so comfortable that by far the greater number of passengers travel in. them. Often the first class carriages are almost empty, and the majority of the few who do travel in them travel in a capacity in which their fares are provided for them—by a Government department, council, board, mercantile firm, or similar concern. .As regards comfort, civility, attention, and adherence to the time table, our railways are second to none. Every effort should be made to make them profitable, and I am sure it would assist if we had one class only.—l am. etc., February 5. '/ Traveller.
