Mr F. W. Mitchell left for Wanganui and Auckland bv the through express yesterday. Mr L. D. Ritchie was a passenger by the through express yesterday for Auckland to attend the annual meeting of the Senate of the University of New Zealand. \ Advice has been received from overseas that Second-lieutenant H, Parata, of Dunedin. who left New Zealand with the First Echelon, is now a brigade transport officer with the rank of captain. Captain A. R. Ccckerell, D. 5.0., N.Z.S.C., of Invercargill, who is serving with the 4th Brigade, N.Z.E.F.. in Egypt, has been promoted to the rank of major. He is at present Deputy Assistant Adjutant^general. Mr W. A. Jenkins, president ol the Otago Swimming Centre, has received advice that he has been appointed referee and diving judge at the New Zealand Women's. Intermediate and Junior Swimming Championships, which will be held at New Plymouth from January 25 to 29. Passengers by the north-bound airliner yesterday were Mr P. Thomas. Mr J. Metcalfe and Mr M. D. Grant for Christchurch. Mr C. G. Sutherland and Mr T. R. Harland for Wellington Miss V Breeze for Palmerston North and Miss E. Wilson for Auckland. Passengers by the south-bound plane were Mrs S. A. Smith from Auckland Mr D McKenzie. Mr J. Walker. Mr Spidy and Mr J Middleton from Wellingtons and Mr D. A. Ewen and Mr W Gordon from Chrislchurch. The apoointment has been gazetted of Dr E. Marsden. C.8.E., M.C.. as scientific adviser to the New Zealand Fighting Fcrces. He is attached to Army Headquarters. Wellington with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Lieu-tenant-colcnel Marsden is secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, an appointment he received when the department was established in 1928. He was born and educated in England, and came to New Zealand first in 1914 as professor of physics at Victoria University College. From January. 1916. until May. 1919. he served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in France, where he held the rank of major in the engineering division of the Fourth Army He was twice mentioned in despatches and was awarded the Military Cross. After his return to New Zealand he was appointed assistant director of education, holding this post until his appointment fco the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research..
