AUSTRALIAN LOSSES CASUALTIES IN LIBYA TOTAL LESS THAN 300 (By Wireless) MELBOURNE, Jan. 14. (Received Jan. 15, at 2 a.m.) Army Headquarters at Melbourne to-day announced that the total casualties suffered by the Australians in the capture of Bardia numbered 296, comprising 31 officers and 265 of other ranks. Of this number, only 17 were killed, or died of wounds. It will be remembered that the total British casualties in 1 the assault on Sidi Barrani and Solium were less than 1000 and those at Bardia were fewer than 600 killed or wounded. On this basis the Australian casualties are about one in five of the total. One reason for the remarkable disparity between the British and Italian casualties is the extensive use which the Imperial forces made of armoured vehicles. URGENT SUMMONS A CALL TO BERLIN (By Wireless) LONDON, Jan. 14. (Received Jan. 15, at 1.30 a.m.) A Renter message from Belgrade states that General Antonescu has been urgently summoned to Berlin and that he will leave to-morrow. Reports from Sofia state that the Bulgarian Prime Minister (M. Filoff) and M. Popoff have had conversations with German representatives. It is also re- | ported that Bulgaria is taking steps to renew her trade agreement with Germany. In both Turkey and Greece the recent broadcast by M. Filoff | is taken to prove that Bulgaria I will not willingly be dragged | into the war for Germany's sake. The realistic view expressed in the speech is appreciated in both countries, and the Greek press in particular pays a tribute to Bulgaria's sincere effort for peace.
