SOLDIER SAVED FROM GAOL
FRIENDS REPAY STOLEN MONEY (By Tasman Air Mail) SYDNEY, Jan. 11. Soldiers of Bathurst camp (New South Wales), by guaranteeing to make good a deficiency involved in an embezzlement charge against cne of their comrades, Henry Arthur Hooper, aged 34, a former secretary cf a country hospital, persuaded a magistrate to release him on bond. Hooper pleaded guilty to a charge of having embezzled £9B 17s 6d from the funds of the hospital. It was stated that he had since enlisted and was in Bathurst camp. Asking the magistrate to allow Hooper out under a bend, counsel for the defendant said that Hooper's fellow soldiers had already subscribed £37 towards repayment to the hosnitaland were preoared to make full restitution. After consideration the magistrate consented to adopt the course suggested, providing that surety was found for the amount involved. An officer from Bathurst camp then entered in the necessary recognisance to make restitution at the rate of £lO per month, the first payment being made forthwith. He also promised that the. soldiers would make up the deficiency within three months.
