Alias if Alias began well in a race he would hold a good chance of finishing in the money. . ' v ' V Hearth Last season when starting favourite at Cromwell Hearth refused to leave the mark. She cannot afford to away a possible start in in the Grand Stand Handicap; Irish Lancer Fire's Ruin Royal Lancer, and others got by Irish Lancer suggest that his stocK may require time to develop into more than useful winners. Brackets • Bolovna and Mosgiel will form a bracket in the Allanton Handicap. Lady Don and Twenty Grand will be bracketed in the Femhill handicap. Taxpayer When he won at the Grand National meeting Taxpayer seemed to be on the threshold of further success, but since then has not shaped up to expectations Second innings Second Innings shaped disappointingly in the Otago Handicap. He was second to Nigger Bov in the Jockey Club Handicap and on that form may shape well in the Allanton Handicap. Straightdell StraightdeTl was worked over more ground than most of the opposition in the Otago Handicap. He thrived on the work, and outstayed the others in a manner suggesting that his trainer was on the right track Bronwen . Bronwen recorded a second win in the Railway Handicap when she won this yeat with 7.5 in Imin 12 3-ssec. Last year she won with 7.13 in Imin 11 4-ssec, a fraction of a ’■’cond outside the race record. Bionwen was unplaced in her seven previous -tarts this season Anglo Irish The Sir Simper—Bridget three-year-old gelding Anglo Irish was a strong fancy for the Milburn Handicap, but got left at the post. He won at Invercargill, where he beat Wild Coon over seven furlongs m Imin 27 3-ssec when acffn•; under 7.1 Schoolgirl Schoolgirl’s form includes a third to Belle Cane and Gayest Son In the Spring Plate, run In Imin 38sec, when giving the winner 71b. She also carried 8,13 into second place behind Sir Amyas 8.2 in the Otaio Plate, run in 2min sseo. * Taierl Hurdles

Flagman meets Airdrie on 71b, Dor.adea on 101 b and Superex on 101 b worse terms than in the Otokia Hifrdles. Superex may show improvement, as he has been off the scene for some considerable time. but Flagman may again start favourue. Recollection meets Flagman on loib better terms, but his leg may trouble him.

A Pipe-opener The dividend paid by Eulogist in the Milburn Handicap was probably Improved by the fact that in the preliminary he took charge of his rider and went far enough to suggest that his chance was diminished. On previous occasions a horse has taken charge of his rider and bolted round the course without wrecking a winning chance, but it is safer and wiser to lead a hard puller to the post or put up a strong rider for a preliminary. Hard Pullers A horse can take as much or more out of himself by fighting with his ridei than if allowed to run along until he settles down a bit. It is a remarkable fact that in New Zealand and Australia a very simple bit of gear is rarely used to steady a horse in his work and in a race, whereas it is in common use in England, particularly on horses racing beyond a middle distance. It is a wellestablished fact that a hard puller very seldom or never stays a journey They beat themselves and the rider, when that is so. care should be taken to assist the rider to steady his mount without unduly fighting »vith him. The present style of riding does not assist in -steadying a puller, and yet riders will use the same length of leather whether on a keen goer, a hard puller, or a lazy one that requires booting up to his work. itoute March There was not much between Route March. Pay Roll and Foreign Coin at the finish of the Great Northern Foal Stakes, but the honours rest with the wl ™ e J. Route March has been seen out five times prior to his latest win. He won the Juvenile Handicap at Avondale on November 3, then came an unplaced performance, followed by a win in the Raklnu Handicap with 8.7 in 60sec. He is a bay colt by Vaals from Royal March by Lucullus-March.. by Marble Arch-Lady Musket, by Blairgowrie and traces back to the Yatterina taproot, and so might be considered ineligible for the Australian Stud Book. March has been a prone producer, and her 20 foals include Te Kara, who ran a head-heat In the Auckland Cup of 1923 and won in 1924. Doria In referring to Dorla's win in the Federal Handiclp, the Christchurch Press said- "Doria, although suffering from a cold' before leaving Riccarton, was considered well enough to be produced in the Federal Handicap, and indicated that she had overcome her trouble by a narrow but fairly comfortable win. On her recent form Doria was entitled to be favourite, but her defeat by St. Cloud in a final gallop at Wingatui and a doubt about her starting lost her much support

Auckland Cup Cheval de Volee. winner of the two previous Auckland Cups, attempted to win again from end to end, but when the pressure was applied in the final stages he faded, the issue being fought out by the each-way favourite Beau Vi.te, Old Bill, and Beau Leon. Cheval de. Volee was followed by Llangollen for .more than a mile, and Beau Vite was not well placed for a mile and a-half. At: this staaa he. got a good position and when asked for a final effort came on full of running to win going away by three parts of a length. Beau Leon was well beaten by Old Bill for second, and Mintlaw, who stayed on well, was a good fourth. The first mile was run in lmin 45sec, the mile and aquarter in 2min 10 l-ssec, the mile and a-half in 2min 35 3-ssec, and the last four furlongs in 49sec. Railway Handicap Bronwen took charge at the turn for home to come on full of running and win her second Railway Handicap. Saxon Tor led out to show the way across the top to Proud Fox, Bronwen, Marshall Hall, Corato, Arvakur, and Palustre, there being little between them. Bronwen drew clear at the distance and went on to win by a length from Proud Fox, who beat his stable-mate, Arvakur, by a neck, with Gold Money Song, from the same stable, right up fourth. Then came Kathbella, Belle Cane, who was badly placed throughout, Palustre, and Pirate King. The each-way favourite Lady Tinkle, was never really dangerous, and Corato and Marshall Hall were drawn very wide out, and after going fast for five furlongs, tired.
