WINGATUI RACES

FIRST DAY OF SUMMER MEETING The Dunedin Jockey Club's summer meeting opened under very pleasant conditions at Wingatui on Wednesday, when the day, though decidedly warm, was freshened by a summer breeze. Late in the afternoon a mild squall brought a few minutes' drenching rain which sent people to shelter, but did nothing to mar the success of the meeting either from the point'of view of the patrons or of the promoters. The unusually large crowd included visitors from many parts of the boutn Island and khaki and Air Force blue uniforms relieved the sombre tones oi the men's dress. As the morning had portended rain, there was no preponderance of summer frocks; smart suits, tailored costumes, and ensembles were the order of the day, while furs were conspicuous.
