APPEAL FOR AID

NEUTRALITY OF EIRE MESSAGE TO AMERICA MR DE VALERA'S BROADCAST (By Wireless) LONDON, Dec. 26. (Received Dec. 27, at 1.30 a.m.) In a broadcast to the United States, Mr De Valera appealed for more help and for more military weapons to be made available to Eire in the defence of her neutrality. He said that Eire now had onefourth of its man-power in the defence services, but it was clearly recognised that Eire's neutrality and her desire to avoid conflict would not necessarily save the country from attack. For the forces that were now being raised more arms were needed. Mr de Valera said that at no time since the war began had there been friction with any of the belligerents, nor had Eire been threatened or bullied by any of them. Eire, he declared, wanted that state of affairs to continue.
