OPENING DAY’S PLAY (Per United Press Association) TIMARU, Dec. 26. New Zealand’s fiftieth chess congress and the first held in Timaru for 30 years wai opened to-night. There were nine entries in. the ■ championship contest—five from Wellington, one from Wanganui, two from Auckland, and one from Otago. In the major open event six visitors and three Timaru players are engaged. . v', - : The following are the results of the first round:—Allerhand v. Kelling, adjourned; Bennett v.. Fairburn, adjourned; L. Knox won from Scott on move 28; Wade beat Vipeept.
