A SOLDIERS’ FUNCTION

PLATOON COMMANDER HONOURED A happy function took place at the Excelsior Hotel, Christchurch, when the No 1 Platoon (Signallers) Headquarters’ Company, entertained its platoon commander, Second-lieutenant A. J. Smeaton, at dinner. Corporal R. V. Ritchie was chairman, and Private D. Swann played the accompaniments. Toasts were honoured, and Sergeant Giles made a presentation of a smoker’s companion and a crystal bowl to Lieutenant and Mrs Smeaton. Private Howell and other members of the platoon spoke of Lieutenant Smeaton’s popularity. Lieutenant Smeaton. who was accorded musical honours, thanked the platoon for the presents and good wishes. The - opportunity was aiso taken to extend good wishes to Mr W. J. F. French, who was until recently a member of the platoon, and who has been appointed to the Air Force. Mr French suitably replied.
