FINAL MEETING FOR yEAR The last meeting of the Dunedin Citv Council for the year was held last night, there being present ‘the Mavor (Mr A. H. Allen), Crs ; D. C. Cameron, J. Wilson, M. C. Henderson, R. Walls, J. McCrae, H. L. Gibson. W. B. Taverner, and E. J. Smith. Standard Building Code Speaking to the adoption of the Works Committee’s report, Cr Smith said that the committee was to be complimented on the manner in which, it had co-operated with, the Dunedin branch of the New Zealand Institute of Architects in its consideration of the proposed new building by-law embodying measures contained in the Standard Code. He said he thought, however, that the by-law. would still require further consideration, and he was personally of the opinion that it was somewhat undesirable that sUch far-reaching alterations in the building regulations'; should be contemplated during war-time. ’M-- 7 v •/ After expressing, the committee’s appreciation of the great’ amount of work done by the chairman in the preparation of the byelaw, Cr Taver-ner-explained that the Standard. Code had been drawn up by a committee of experts from data' secured as the resoft' of the deplorable outcome of earthquakes .in the. North Island. Opinions differed concerning the earthquake risk in the southern part of the South. Island, but he pointed out that the Code referred only to new buildings. Most commercial buildings in Dunedin were so constructed that they would resist a com siderable degree of earthquake shock, but as they were replaced by more modern buildings the position would steadily improve. The, report was adopted. Next Meeting of Council It was decided that the next meeting of the council Would be held on January 27. At the conclusion of the meeting a social hour was held .in the Mayors reception rooms, and best wishes' lor Christmas and New Year.were exchanged.
