COUNCIL’S MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Tuapeka County Council was held yesterday End was attended by Crs H. S. Thompson (in the chair), R. Hall, J. George, J. D. Revie, R. Cotton, J. C. Bennetts and E. H. Murney. The treasurer (Mr R. F. Batchelor) reported that receipts for the month totalled £B7O 10s, and expenditure amounted to £3230 19s sd. The credit balance at the bank was £4B 11s 8d in the County Fund and £ISOO in the bridges and plant renewal account.— Cr Revie said that the position was highly satisfactory for this time of the year.—The report was adopted. The district engineer of the Public Works Department wrote advising thrt because his head office did not consider the work of sufficient national importance, improvements and repairs to Stewart’s and Aitcheson’s roads, the metalling of the old Switzers road, and the gravelling of the Beaumont Station road would have to be deferred in the meantime. —Received. Mr E. Fletcher Roberts, of Dunedin, the county consulting engineer, wrote recommending that a concrete ford be built for the Haugh's bridge crossing on Mill road. The ford would consist of 3 feet concrete pipes, with a concrete decking, which would be clear of water except in exceptional Hoods.— It was decided to ask Mr Roberts to submit plans for the work. Mr Roberts also reported on the best method of repairing a bridge off Parkhill road.—lt was decided to carry out repairs at an estimated cost of £ 146, as suggested by the engineer. In connection with Mr S. Wright’s application for the closing of the road adjoining his property, it was decided that the council advise the applicant that it could not see its way clear to close the road as it considered that it might be required for future subdivision of land in the locality. It was decided that the dog tax fees for 1941 should be the seme as previously. The tenders of J. J. Brogan for gravelling Cockleshell road, Read’s road and Winter’s road, at 5s 6d, 4s 9d and 7s lid per cubic yard respectively, were accepted.
