WIDESPREAD RAIDS
BRITISH HEAVY BOMBERS MANNHEIM ATTACKED SEVERAL FIRES STARTED (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, Dec. 13. After struggling through cold and cloudy weather, British •• heavy bombers had the luck they deserved when they reached Mannheim last night. For several hours, states the Air Ministry’s news service, they had flown in thick cloud' with no sign of the ground, but when they had almost arrived at Mannheim there was a sudden clearing, and the Rhine lay : bright below them. The pilots picked out the power station, which was the main objective of the night’s raids. Sticks of bombs and many incendiaries were dropped, and immediately, fires broke out and were still burning when the aircraft left.
Other bombers made earlier attacks on the railway and sidings behind the river in good weather. There were several fires which eventually reached material which exploded with great force,. The harbour at Mannheim was also raided and the docks at Calais, Boulogne, and Naples were severely hit during the night.
